KP Launch
Through KP LAUNCH, Kaiser Permanente offers unique and dynamic health care internship programs that provide interns with practical job skills and experiences in a supportive environment.

As a school or community organization supported by Kaiser Permanente, we invite you to encourage your youth to apply for the 2017 program.  This internship program provides youth from underserved communities and diverse backgrounds a paid full-time work experience for eight weeks over the summer.  While working, interns gain exposure to various health careers that they may choose to pursue after high school graduation.

KP LAUNCH interns will have the opportunity to:
  • Work full-time (40 hours per week) within various Kaiser Permanente departments for eight weeks paid at minimum wage
  • Learn about a variety of different health careers opportunities
  • Meet and learn from health professionals and their internship program peers
  • Gain professional and personal development through workshops

The summer 2017 program in the Regional Offices in downtown Oakland is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 19 and end on Friday, August 11. Application materials are attached to this email for you to distribute to your eligible youth.  Applications are due in-person on Monday, March 6 by 5 pm.

The program prioritizes the selection of junior and senior high school students and recent high school graduates; others are welcome to apply. Applicants who are dependents of Kaiser Permanente employees are ineligible to participate in the KP LAUNCH summer internship programs.

Mentoring in Medicine and Science

The Clinical Immersion and Mentoring Summer Internship is an intensive 4 week program that allows students to explore their interests in medical careers. MIMS summer internship program participants:
  • Shadow health professionals in patient care settings, including a busy, urban emergency department, out-patient clinics and private clinics
  • Interact with a broad spectrum of health professionals through workshops and networking sessions
  • Go on field trips to anatomy labs and other health science centers and health professional schools
  • Ride along with a Firefighter and an Emergency Medical Technician for a day (based on availability)
  • Participate in leadership, personal and professional development workshops
  • Receive one-on-one mentorship and advising
Upon successful completion of their internship, interns will receive a $650 stipend (stipend based on engagement).

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY
  • Be from a group that is underrepresented in the health professions
  • Have an interest in pursuing a career in health
  • Be available to participate full time for the duration of the 4-week program
  • No minimum GPA requirement
  • Priority is given to 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students attending OUSD (non-charter) schools but all are welcome to apply.

Health Excellence and Academic Leadership Program
Highland Hospital 1411 E31st Street Oakland, CA 94602

HEAL is a 5-week internship at Highland Hospital which provides exposure to healthcare careers and hands-on experience in a hospital setting. HEAL summer internship program participants:
  • Rotate through hospital departments (such as Maternal and Child Health, Radiology, Pediatrics, Emergency Room) where they assist with department duties and shadow doctors, nurses, and other providers
  • Learn about a broad range of healthcare jobs and the educational pathways to pursuing a healthcare career
  • Attend classes and workshops covering topics such as professionalism, collaboration and teamwork, personal health, and the social determinants of health
  • Go on field trips, including a simulation lab, anatomy lab, and college visits
Upon successful completion of their internship, interns will receive an $800 stipend.

Health Care Services Agency 
June 26 - July 28, 2017 | Monday - Friday8:30am - 4:30pm
Alameda County Health Care Services 1000 Creekside, San Leandro Blvd, San Leandro, CA 94577 (also includes rotations at various Alameda County locations)

The Alameda County Health Care Services Agency (HCSA) is providing a 5-week internship that will expose students to career opportunities in the fields of public health, behavioral health, environmental health, administration/indigent health. HCSA summer internship participants will:
  • Intern in Alameda County’s Public Health, Behavioral Health, Environmental Health, or Administration/Indigent Health departments where they will assist with department duties and engage in hands-on, experiential learning projects
  • Participate in seminars and workshops that will expose students to a broad range of public/community health careers
  • Undertake group projects that promote teamwork and collaboration
  • Learn how to use social media to promote public and community health

Summer Interns will also be enrolled OUSD’s summer internship seminar. Priority will be given to applicants who are current 11th graders enrolled in OUSD health pathways. Upon successful completion of their internship, interns will receive 10 elective credits and $800 stipend.

Mentoring in Medicine & Science (MIMS) provides participants with valuable mentoring, career exposure and leadership development. MIMS’ summer internship program participants:
  • Interact with a broad spectrum of health professionals through workshops, field trips and networking sessions
  • Participate in leadership, personal and professional development workshops
  • Shadow health professionals in patient care settings 
  • Receive one-on-one mentorship and advising
  • Provide mentorship to high school students

$1000 stipend based on engagement and successful completion of internship. The program is a full time commitment and participants must be available for entire duration of the 4-week program.

Stanford Summer Community College Premedical Program
The Stanford Summer Community College Premedical Program (SSCCPP) targets current community college students considered low-income and/or underrepresented in medicine providing exposure to medicine and health through topics in health disparities, leadership challenges in health provision and administration, science success strategies, professional development, clinical exposure, successful preparation for the medical school application process, postsecondary and graduate/professional school financing.
For the first time ever, SSCCPP will be offered as a six-week residential program, allowing talented and motivated community college students interested in medicine to immerse themselves in the Stanford School of Medicine network through a variety of personal and professional development experiences.
This program is designed to impact the San Francisco Bay area and its contiguous counties, promoting growth and diversity of the health workforce in the region.
Participants are REQUIRED to reside on campus for the duration of the program and will be immersed in topic areas including:
  • Critical reading and research of medical literature
  • Civic engagement, leadership, and political activism in medicine
  • Science preparatory classes (previously anatomy, molecular cellular bio, chemistry)
  • An introduction to the MCAT
  • Academic success and test-taking strategies
  • The medical school admissions and financing process

Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute
The objective of the CHORI Student Research Program is to provide basic and clinical research training opportunities for High School and Undergraduate students. The goal is to provide these research opportunities for individuals from dis-advantaged backgrounds, racial and ethnic minorities, and others who are underrepresented in this field (e.g., individuals with disabilities). The CHORI Program provides students with a research training experience to stimulate interest in pursuing a career in biomedical, clinical, basic and/or behavioral research in a friendly and nurturing environment.
